Often we have discussions about problems and we get excited about calling them a bug.

But what other names do we use?

For example, sometimes I will say:

> This **strange** thing happened…

or one that I just used today

> I **noticed** that this happened…

what other words do you use to describe bugs without saying the bug word?

- Something weird is going on…
- I noticed this odd behavior…
- There’s an inconsistency here…
- This feels off…

I have seen something unusual
It looks abnormal
Not working as explained or suggested
System is behaving crazy
It seems to be odd

I usually say:

- I have found an **issue**..
- I have found an **anomaly**..
- I have found something **strange**
- This looks **odd**
- That looks **suspicious**

Sometimes depend upon the nature of the item as well, whatever suits in that moment 😛

My go-to is ‘unexpected behaviour’, short, simple and an easy conversation to have.

Instead of “its a bug” I some times “it bugs me that” or “as user it would bug me that”.
Bug ist not just a noun. 🙂

I just call them testing observations, though it depends how blatant the fault is.

I have also tried I struggling to do x as when I do I am getting y instead. Am I doing something wrong? Making sure that I accept that I might be to blame for the activity and to try and start a conversation with the developer.

</div>

- When I do X, **I observed** Y happens.
- Is that acceptable behaviour for this product? I’m not sure what I’m looking at - can you talk me through it? What would the expected behaviour be? Would a user be aware of that? How should that information be shown? Where does that validation take place? Why / how does that happen? Is that consistent with other parts of the system? Do our customers report that this is an issue?

> I’ll save you from having to read the long background story, but I’m setting up a new bug repository in Jira for one of our company projects. They don’t really want to call it “bugs”, though. I’m trying to come up with something a little more neutral, and since it’s in Jira, I can’t call it Issues. (Everything in Jira is an issue!) So far I have Problems Defects Discrepancies Obstacles Anyone have any other suggestions? I feel I’m missing something obvious. Thanks!

where I created a Bob Ross meme about [this](https://club.ministryoftesting.com/t/whats-another-word-for-software-bug/76107/19)

And in an earlier project I did once comment a bug work item as Happy Accident.

I use “unexpected behaviour” as well, particularly because it makes it subjective: I didn’t expect this behaviour, but maybe my model of the system is wrong, and someone else would have expected to see it.

One of the devs I’ve worked with used the word “opportunities,” as in, “There are many opportunities for improvement in this code.”

I generally say :

- I have few observations
- Is it happening for me or anybody else?
- something seems to be wrong here
- And the classic expression when it’s really un - un -un expected one “Oh no !!!”
🙂

I tried something and… now it’s acting strange.
I think I found something a little off.
Not sure if this is expected, but it looks off to me
