Global Resources for Mental Health Awareness and Support

We are a global and truly diverse community  I was inspired today by a request for resources from @gemma.hill1987. I thought it would be great if we could all get together to create a list of mental health resources (help and awareness) by region/country.

We may be based in one geographic region (e.g. the UK) but be speaking to/have friends in another (e.g. the US) who need our help and we may not necessarily know what region-specific help there is for that person but want to help them.

Ireland :ireland:

I have found:

Phone numbers

  • Call 999 if someone is in urgent need of help
  • Pieta House (Suicide & Self-harm) have a 24/7 Freephone helpline that can be accessed by calling 1800 247 247.
  • Samaritans Tel: 116 123 Text: 087 2 60 90 90
  • Aware support line 1800 80 48 48 which operates from 10am to 10pm.

Web resources

  • Pieta house: centre for the prevention of self-harm or suicide
  • Aware: offers help, information and support, specifically for depression and bipolar
  • A Lust For Life whose aim is to support, inspire and empower people to take care of their own minds
  • Reach Out: offers help, information and support on a range of topics
  • See Change: offers information and id dedicated to ending mental health stigma
  • The HSE: Health service advice and contact information for helplines
  • Grow: Mental Health support and Recovery
  • Shine: Supporting people affected by mental ill health
  • Mental Health Ireland: A list of possible services and helplines to use
  • Turn 2 Me: Online one to one or group counseling
  • Bodywhys: Eating Disorders Associations of Ireland

UK :uk:

I have found (thanks to Gem):

Phone lines

  • Call 999 or 111 for medical help
  • Call 116 123 free to talk to the Samaritans

Web resources

Can you help the community? What support and resources are there in your country for mental health? If you could add the country and/or a flag to your response, it would really help people who are quickly searching for information specific to them.

Thank you all so much in advance :hugs:

Other things for UK folk:

Find a therapist from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy: https://www.bacp.co.uk/search/Therapists (Once you’ve put in a location it will give you more options to filter exactly what you’re looking for).

You may be able to self refer for NHS treatment and resources for depression and anxiety, depending on area. Look here for Adult Improving Access to Psychological Therapies: https://www.nhs.uk/Service-Search/Psychological%20therapies%20(IAPT)/LocationSearch/10008

Beat Eating Disorders (they have phone and web chat helplines as well as online resources): https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/

Mind, a charity that covers a lot of mental health issues and has a tool for finding out what support may be best for you: https://www.mind.org.uk/

A general point, which may play differently in different countries; but if there’s an active trade union in your workplace, join it because many unions - especially those who organise in knowledge-based industries - campaign on workplace occupational health issues (including mental health) as well as diversity and equality issues. In the best cases, workplace reps will have access to resources and experience from across their sector and may even have had training in how to deal with workplace issues, either in negotiations with local management or individual representation.

Also - check the laws where you live. Your issue may be covered by disability laws or equality laws.

If it isn’t, you may need to be much more discreet about seeking support than if it is.

For instance, if you’re in the USA and your issue is covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, your workplace must make reasonable accommodations for your issue. While the ADA doesn’t cover mental illness, it does cover a number of neurological issues that cause mental illness - such as the narcolepsy-induced depression I live with.

Excellent idea
I use also

and some interest reading here:

Yes, a good friend of mine from the PHP community started this a couple of years ago. But even though the organisation is US based, several people in the UK (and other EU) PHP communities are involved with OSMI and can help locally. If you want me to get you in touch, let me know as I have most of the OSMI folks on speed-dial.
