I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole on Quality Engineering, help! 😃

I’m curious to know what resources you’ve stumbled across on the topic of Quality Engineering.

Anything from what it is, to models, to experience reports and generally practical ways forward with the concept and future of it.

I have learned a lot from QCSD (Quality Conscious Software Delivery) Framework by Lalit Bhamare.

Have also implemented it in my work and the results are good.

> When you think of “Software Quality Engineering” – what comes to your mind? Typically, one’s mind gets clouded with words like automation, continuous testing, automated quality gates, CI/CD, observability, SonarQube, DORA metrics, SRE, and so on....

My experience tale with the framework:

Hi,
Any news on this?
I’d like to go through a few structured training sessions or classes on various subjects that aren’t testing. I do have exposure and learning about lots of these, but I feel I might not be good enough.

Some examples that I’m thinking of:

- dealing with contracts, SLAs, third parties integrated systems and relationships;
- standardization, regulations, laws, quality management systems and compliance;
- cross departmental quality management;
- CI/CD - containers, cloud systems, infrastructure, monitoring and observability;
- data quality, integrity, transformations and adaptations to system and product needs (e.g in fintech there are hundreds of clients sending data from a couple dozen systems in hundreds of different formats, from/for thousands of data points);
- reporting and dashboards; product quality metrics(business/software);
- solution design, architecture, business analysis linked practices to identify improvements ahead of implementations;
- software engineering practices: identifying misuse, gaps, technical debt consequences;
- other practices which could be technical or business domain specific.

We did a [Testing Planet session on Quality Engineering](https://www.ministryoftesting.com/collections/exploring-quality-engineering-the-testing-planet-episode-8) and some of the sessions at TestBash have a QE vibe to them.

We also explored [Systems Thinking](https://www.ministryoftesting.com/collections/exploring-systems-thinking-the-testing-planet-episode-9) and [Quality Coaching](https://www.ministryoftesting.com/collections/exploring-quality-coaching-the-testing-planet-episode-10) as themes that are very connected to Quality Engineering.

Well worth a watch, imho!

These are my next go-to places to study these topics.

thanks to the MoT for making some of the best material on these important yet ignored topics.

I think it’s worth highlighting that Quality Engineering seems to have a different meaning depending on the company you work for, or at least from the conversations I’ve seen on here around the topic. Some places relate Quality Engineering to those focused on UI Automation or Postman and other places really push them towards more SDET/SRE or Test Automation Engineers. For my organization, we’re pushing those with the title of Quality Engineer more into that SDET/SRE type role.

One of the absolute best resources I have gone through again and again is the book “Software Engineering at Google.” Majority of the book is dedicated to testing and highlighting it’s need for it in small and big ways. It’s more focused on the mindset instead of the how to. It’s been a fantastic read. (Read it free here but totally worth the purchase) [Software Engineering at Google](https://abseil.io/resources/swe-book/html/toc.html)

The follow up to that is the Site Reliability Engineer book. It’s about taking that Engineer part much farther [Google SRE - Site reliability engineering book Google index](https://sre.google/sre-book/table-of-contents/)

When it comes to more of the specific types of testing I really enjoyed Full Stack Testing - [Full Stack Testing[Book]](https://learning.oreilly.com/library/view/full-stack-testing/9781098108120/)

As far as videos, I really like Nick Chapsas (DomeTrain) - he’ll give you great learnings around testing fundamentals and tips (more closely related to dotnet but the fundamentals apply everywhere) [https://www.youtube.com/@nickchapsas/search?query=testing](https://www.youtube.com/@nickchapsas/search?query=testing)

There are things to be learned from previous generations of quality engineers such as Genichi Taguchi. This is a link to one of his books: [Introduction to Quality Engineering: Designing Quality into Products and Processes](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Introduction-Quality-Engineering-Designing-Processes/dp/9283310837/ref=sr_1_4)
