I’m currently building a local-first Windows tool for working with existing image files, and I’m trying to better understand how testers actually handle visual evidence before deciding what would be useful to build.
One thing I’m curious about is what happens _after_ screenshots are captured during testing.
If a testing session leaves you with a bunch of screenshots, what do you normally do next?

For example:
-Do you rename them?
-Sort them by bug, test case, or feature?
-Pick out only the useful ones?
-Move them into folders?
-Attach them to Jira, Linear, or another system?
-Or do they mostly stay where they were captured?

I’m especially interested in any repetitive manual work between:
**I captured the evidence → the useful evidence is where it needs to be.**
Would love to hear what this actually looks like in your workflow.

Hey, I’m a bit confused by the question / options. I document my testing as I go, including screenshots. This means that I don’t save screenshots as files that need names; I just directly paste them into my notes, so I have no need to organise screenshots after testing.

Not sure whether that’s what you were after, but I hope it helps a bit.

Hey @rworks24 - why are you building a tool as there are already plenty of them available?

Otherwise similar like the answer from @cassandrahl - the screenshots are documented on the go and inserted where they are needed to have. Important is the documentation of test reporting (imo). And after a testing session the screenshots saved are getting deleted. Keeps the disc clean and also sticks to company and client policies. 🙂

deleting the loose files after the useful screenshots are in the test notes makes sense, especially when client data or retention rules are involved.

the part i’d protect is the context around each image: the starting state, the action immediately before it, and what the screenshot is meant to prove. a screenshot without that context is easy to keep and hard to use.

if i were shaping the tool, i’d optimize for selecting the useful images, tying them to a step and expected versus actual result, sending them to Jira or Linear, then cleaning up the local originals safely.

If they’re sitting in a local folder on your desktop, they’re basically lost context waiting to happen. The pattern that works best in active teams is binding screenshots directly to the test run or step at the exact moment you take them. That’s usually where a dedicated test management tool earns its keep, letting you log steps and attach media inline so that three weeks later, when a dev asks “what browser state was this on?”, the screenshot, system details, and exact build ID are already linked together in one place.
