What words have you heard or use only in a software engineering context?

Words mean a lot in our world. And boy oh boy do we often debate the nuances of words in the testing, QA and quality engineering community.

It came up on another thread the other day. I’m curious about what words you have heard or are using only in a software engineering context.

A few spring to mind from my career:

  • Standup
  • Daily Scrum
  • Microservices
  • CRUD
  • SQL
  • Database Migration

Optional question: What might this remind us about context, scene setting, playback of understanding and the challenges we face with creating a shared understanding?

Would be interesting to build a list of words we only (tend to) use in a software engineering context. :slightly_smiling_face:

My current client uses “WSU’s”.
I was like…what are WSU’s ?

Turns out they are Weekly Stand-ups.
On top of the Daily, they have Weeklies.

It’s not entirely clear to me what the added value or purpose is here.
Ah, the joy of building context (I’ve recently started there).

As I’m not into rugby: Scrum

Also I consider this a different challenge for English native speakers Vs nonnative speakers.
While the German on my job is heavily influenced by English, having many English tech terms, my freetime German has way less of that.
E.g. I use German words for server and client when talking about non-tech context. I consider that to be different for native speakers as they use these words in tech and non-tech context.

I’m gonna take a different route here:
Me and my colleagues when we’re going on an outing, talk like this:
Should we get sausages from this place or that one? Meh, we’ll decide on “runtime” (when we meet up for rendezvous)
