This question was asked during a live session of episode 10 of The Testing Planet: Exploring Quality Coaching, hosted by @fullsnacktester , with @aj_wilson (representing Aviva), and @clare_catherine & @shweta_jaju (representing Co-Op).
We would like to hear what you do at your own companies too:
When and where does quality coaching work best in practice?
I saw this question had yet to receive a response, so I thought I’d offer one.
I view the response to this question from two perspectives:
Macro/Organizational Coaching
In this perspective, I am working with the leaders of our organization (both
technical and business) on how an effective quality narrative allows
for each person in the organization, no matter how long they’ve been working
in their profession, to be able to ‘buy in’ to our quality objectives.
“Micro”/Individual Coaching
In this perspective, I get the tremendous privilege to work with individuals.
This can be new test/quality engineers, or people that have been working with
us for many years. I do my best to identify with where the people I’m working
with are in their careers, understand their career goals and how they’d like to
grow in their role.
A careful reader would remind me “what about team coaching?” From my view,
team coaching is the intersection of organizational and individual aspects. I’m
striving to make the organizational goals more relevant to a team, but also am
ready to work through team-specific issues/questions/concerns.
Hope this helps, and if this drives additional questions/viewpoints I’ll do
my best to respond. There’s room to provide more detail on each approach if requested.
