Almost everybody’s saying that Quality Engineering is “beyond” just testing. So does anyone know why the community is still called Ministry of Testing and not Ministry of Quality Engineering? Or is there a plan to do so?
I’m not voting for changing the name, though. I think testing could perhaps be the most important core component of Quality Engineering. Am just curious if somebody else has ever thought this same exact question.
Your thinking is in line with where we are going, turns out it isn’t so easy to make that quick change with a ton of legacy stuff and things like potential SEO implications.
We’ve been making the shift towards the ‘MoTaverse’ as a way to move away from ‘testing’. We see ourselves as a tech community with quality at the heart. You’ll find that in most places across the website we refer to ourselves as the MoTaverse…though as I write that, we still have the Ministry of Testing logo here in The Club.
Hopefully we’ll get there over the coming months/year.
I’m really glad that in the past it never went down the path of ministry of quality assurance, from a personal view because QA was also viewed as beyond just testing it ended up significantly lowering the understanding of the craft of testing but thankfully MoT retained that focus.
QE I see as different and I prefer that to QA type role but it also carries that risk in my view. I do not see QE as a step beyond good testing, broader yes but not a replacement and I tend to see it as a team thing rather than a role however I can understand why many transition more towards QE type roles and why they are in high demand across the market at least in this cycle. We may now have more here who identify as QE’s than testers as a result.
I like the broadening aspect of the community but I still like that very specific craft of software testing, for me particularly the discovery and investigation of risk. It may be getting diminished but it’s still a lot more fun than my other broader QE activities and I hope to have that luxury of doing what I love for a just a little bit longer.
“Moqe” ? That does kind of roll out easily and it sounds cosy too.
I also detected this shift in name to Motaverse. I’m still not sure what it means or whether about universality of quality across all things or if it’s a new motability scooter brand, I may need one soon. I’m a fan of asking questions about our and my own identity continuously. It’s super useful to take a peep outside of your own clubs whatever they do. Just from time to time to see if we are having the impact we are aiming for. That’s why change is powerful as it allows us to tell a different part of our story with less baggage. I see overlaps in all places like the work that SRE (Site reliability engineers) and so many others do, and with the current economic crunch pushing down on quality globally, we need to communicate more now than ever.
