I’ve heard it in various places, too; Michael Bolton talk, and poking about Ingo Philipp used it in TTwT with regards to storytelling. I also know I’ve seen a little cartoon of a car somewhere with this example but I cannot find it.
The RST notes use the example as “testers light the way” - seeing things for what they are and making informed decisions about quality possible.
Where it came from I have absolutely no idea, but it’s a pretty neat concept.
