Accessibility Challenge: Can you use WCAG principles to assess a website’s accessibility?

Title: Try using WCAG to assess accessibility of a website

Time: 60 minutes

Purpose:

To put your learning into practice by using WCAG principles to assess the accessibility of a website. This hands-on activity will help strengthen your understanding of the WCAG levels and what they look like in action.

Activity:

  • Choose a website to review—ideally, one you use regularly or are curious about.
  • Look into the different WCAG levels (A, AA, AAA) and the four key principles:
    • Perceivable – Can users recognise and access content with the senses available to them?
    • Operable – Can users navigate and interact with the site in different ways?
    • Understandable – Is the content easy to read and predictably structured?
    • Robust – Does the content work well with assistive technologies?
  • Use the WAI Easy Checks resource (linked below) as a starting point to guide your assessment.
  • Spend some time exploring the website and noting any accessibility strengths or gaps.
  • Write and submit a short report summarising:
    • Which site you tested
    • What stood out to you (both good and bad)
    • Which WCAG principles were met or missed
    • Anything that surprised or challenged you
