Welcome Mobile Testing Learners,

this is the topic for exercise #9 - Mobile App Business Models. Here is a quick recap of the task scenarios.

Task 1: Freemium apps. Advertisement vs. in-app purchase

  • Open the app store on your mobile device
  • Find 2 freemium apps, one with in-app purchase and one with advertisement
  • Do you like the freemium apps and the business model behind it?
  • Note down your impression and feelings

Task 2: Paid Apps

  • Open the app store on your mobile device
  • Find 2 paid apps
  • Read the store presentation material of both apps
  • Which app are you more likely to buy based on the store presentation?
  • Note down your impression and feelings

I am really looking forward to your results and questions.

Best,
Daniel

I probably never bought a mobile app, at the same time I never tester a mobile app that was not free. Wondering if freemium vs paid apps how the customers are reacting on a bug. Would imagine if they paid the would raise hell while if the app was free they unistalll and go to the next free application that does the same thing.

What about companion apps? Eg an app to controll a smart speaker? Do those fall under the free or paid apps? Or are they a category bythemselfs?

Hi Bill,

great question. For me apps like smart speaker controller are free apps as well but are connected to a paid hardware or software service.
Users tend to have much higher expectations here which is understandable. Testers must have this in mind and not only focus on the app in this case but rather on the overall product and services.

Best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I’m in the same case of Bill, I have never bought a mobile app! I use only free apps

1. Freemium

  • TrueCaller : with possibility to upgrade to premium so it’s in-app purchase
  • Hotels.Com : with advertisement

Actually, I prefer apps without advertisement! I downloaded Adblock to block such marketing notifications inside freemium app.
Although I’m not the one who want to pay for apps but In my opinions, apps with purchase are better than app with advertisement because if you are a friendly user of that app and you are convinced with it, you want more option so it’s worthy !

2. Paid Apps

  • OfficeSuite Pro
  • My Apps List
Based on the store presentation and app info I would choose the first one OfficeSuite Pro because it’s updated recently comparing to My Apps List which is a very old (almost 3 years ago). Add to that the number of downloading it is much bigger.

Kind Regards,
Emna

Hi Emna,

you are not alone :). The majorty of app users prefer freemium apps and this type is also the most popular one. However, some apps provide real good value and quality and even more features for some $, so it might worth the investment. And think about the development team behind the app. These are in most cases really good developers, testers, designers and product people involved and they also need to earn money  .

Regarding your adblocker app, have you noticed any problems on the freemium apps while removing the ads? Something like UI glitches or performance issues? Would love to hear more about this.

I really like your paid app observation! It’s really important to check the last updated version and if a developer or development team is releasing a newer version from time to time before spending money.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Glad that you liked my observation !
Well regarding Adblock app, it helps more than it causes problems. (I use it also in my laptop as an extension in google chrome). I’m used to it so I didn’t notice any critical problem due to it. For me it’s acceptable while it hides publicity that I don’t like to see
Noting that may be it depends on the phone performance also, now my phone is Galaxy S8 + but before my previous phone was Samsung core prime. I observe some UI glitches and a lot of performance issues (probably because of AdBlock).
What do you think is it a correct thinking?

Kind Regards,
Emna

Hi Emna,

well it can be related to your prev. phone. Not easy to say, I think it also depends on the screen size and the size of the ad-placement.

Best thing to check is to use a performance profiler, like the one build into Android studio and to check if the adblocker app causing any issues while using the app with removed ads. Then remove the adblocker and perform the same actions again and compare your results.

Best,
Daniel

Task 1:
I think headspace is freemium. It has a few free lessons, but have a tons os lessons if we pay.
Solid Explorer its free, but we have an option to upgrade to access a few other features.
Ragnarok: Idle Poring its a game, and as usual, it has options to buy things.
Performance Security have a lot of ads, but there is an option to remove the ads upgrading to premium.

Task 2:
Simple Gallery Pro: The screenshots of the presentation are not very inviting.
PowerAudio Pro: Its seem better and more presentable than the other app.

I feel that freemium apps is a more democratic business model for users. We have the opportunity to give it a try and unlock more paying for it.
