Title: Creating a Now/Next/Later Operability Improvements Roadmap
Time: 30 mins - 1 hour
Introduction: Improving operability can mean changes to many of the foundations of your system and ways of working. This can be big and scary for everyone involved. Its important to create a vision for operability that picks off the most important things to improve early on but allows you to cast your minds forward. I use the runbook template and put each area into the following:
- Now - things we can work on now to make a difference immediately
- Next - once we have worked on the Now’s, we will enable the Next’s
- Later - things we want a home for but will tackle them later if we still need to
Purpose: Create a visual roadmap for operability improvements without overwhelming the team with too much.
Activity:
- If you completed the Matching Testing Activities to Operability Improvements exercise, use this list as an input. Otherwise get a copy of the run book template and discuss with your team which areas you want to focus on.
- For each run book category (or related task if there are specifics), place in either:
- Now
- Next
- Later
- Write up your findings and add them to the README.md file in your application repo (or wherever your team stores its documentation. Alternatively create these as items for your backlog, if you have buy in from the team.
