How to Create Test Plan and RTM for Fresher Tester

Hello everyone! My name is Bea, and I’m from Vietnam. I’ve created two topics in our community about my job, but I’d like to introduce myself again. I currently work as a Fresher Manual Tester at a product company and have been in this field for around five months. I’m the only tester here, so I manage all the testing tasks independently.

In this sprint, my responsibilities include creating and finalizing the Test Plan Document and the Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) for the upcoming year (starting on Dec 1st). However, my experience so far has mainly been in writing test cases and logging bugs, so I don’t have much experience with creating a Test Plan or an RTM. I would really appreciate any advice or guidance on how to approach these tasks.

Here is my to-do list for creating and finalizing the Test Plan Document:

  1. Search for and prepare a Test Plan template
  2. Gather requirements for the Test Plan
  3. Define the structure of the Test Plan and research how to develop it
  4. Draft the Test Plan Document
  5. Share the draft for review
  6. Update the Test Plan based on feedback
  7. Revise and finalize the Test Plan

Any suggestions or advice you have would be very helpful. Thank you!

Hi
One piece of advice for a Test Plan would be to keep it simple.

Ask yourself is a Test Plan on a page enough or does it require a more formal document?

A peer of mine introduced me a good few years ago to the 5W’s to assist in pulling this information together………

What - Is the Test phase is it Unit / System / Integration etc
Why - Why is the “What” relevant or needed for your project / organisation. Will it be manual or Automated?
Who - Who owns the “What” and who will take part
Where - What environment will it be tested in and what tools are you using?
When - Timeline for the project or the sequence of phases / levels in “What”

Having this level of info will go a long way to helping define your Test Plan.
