Starting out in software testing

Hello, I am Godwin, based in Leeds. I hold a bachelors in Business Management and IT, with particular interest in tech. Through my course, I have developed coding/scripting skills in web development (HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, SQL and Java), however I am mainly interested in software testing. I’ve recently tried automation tools like Selenium through Visual Studio 2022, using C# to run basic test scripts.

Any tips, guidance and/or support in getting into Software Testing, as a newbie, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to the MOT community Godwin, well if you want to learn about software testing, you will know that there are 2 sides, manual testing, and writing code to so dome of the testing for you. Both are equally important, both are hard, but when you balance them evenly, you get long term results.

Take your time, there is loads to learn here, and once again, welcome.

Thats great news . I’m with @conrad.braam you definitely need to understand both areas. Its why its called “test automation” in my opinion - you need good tests to automate. So you need to build your understanding of how you build a good test from the information you’re given…and that is a long journey.
If you want to break into a career, that CV needs to show dare I say “a passion for testing and quality”. I saw this article of getting involved in open source projects which will help build your skills with real software and build relationships with fellow developers and testers. You’ve also got the learning options in MOT, I’m no expert on them as I haven’t explored them enough but at a quick glance this might be a good place to start but explore Where software testers, QA and quality engineers build their careers | Ministry of Testing for more options.
Keep your eye on the club and take part, I’m learning new things every day just be being present.

Hey Godwin, welcome to the MoTaverse!

I hope you enjoy your stay. I was just in Leeds yesterday

There are loads of resources over on the MoTaverse.

As mentioned, there’s always a fine balance between automation and more human (manual) approaches to the overall picture of testing and quality engineering.

Some keywords worth searching on: continuous quality, systems thinking, quality coaching, quality engineering and of course AI.

We’ve been building out our glossary which is always an interesting to learn and fall down rabbit holes.

Also, there’s STEC (Software Testing Essentials Certificate), which has been created with 57 practicing experts within the industry. It’s fresh, modern and engaging. Designed to get you going as quickly as possible.

The MoTaverse is also a great place to build up your MoT Profile. Here’s mine.

Edit: also, there’s an MoT Leeds Meetup.

Thanks very much for the welcome. Yes, I’m aware and curious to explore both manual and automated testing. :100:

Thanks very much for the info. I’m definitely willing to learn and build experience through open source contribution.

Thanks, Rosie. I appreciate all the info. I will definitely take the opportunity to join the MoT Leeds Meetup and look into taking part in the STEC course.
