The team is already on Christmas leave. What do you suggest?

Save for one in Eastern Europe and one down south, all the devs have already broken up for Christmas. This leaves me at something of a loose end. I’m going to have to be creative with my timesheet before I also leave on Friday lunchtime. I could watch my Selenium IDE scripts repeatedly plod along all week, but I’d rather do something more productive, given that we’re into the annual code freeze.

So, I’m looking for suggestions for free (i.e. YouTube etc.) courses I can dive into and emerge basking in the glow of new wisdom on Friday.

I already have a couple of things lined up for the mighty Postman, Elizabeth Hendrickson always fills a nice hour, and I have what Mark E Smith would describe as a “casual set list” to potter through, but this still leaves a lot of gloomy December daylight before Friday and the merciful release of 10 days off.

What do you suggest?

Test Automation University is an awesome free resource - you can be sure to find something fitting to your current knowledge level and tech stack there.

There’s a ton of stuff on Youtube as well. One of my favorite channels is for example https://www.youtube.com/@EvilTester. But maybe he’s not what you’re looking for right now. Is there a particular topic or technology you’re interested in at the moment?

Plan your holidays in advance a bit more?

As @baysha points out there is loads of online learning content. If you have MOT pro you can binge watch hours and hours of great content too, if you do not have MOT pro, compile a list of reasons why you should and write up a proper letter to your boss to make sure you have it next year. But do share any great clips and podcasts that you do find inspiring too.

I’m going to be spending a bit of time doing small code cleanups, repairing tests that have rotted a bit and doing a bit of inventory taking. I have also bookmarked a recent Android conference that put their talks online and I plan to watch a few of those. Benjamin Kadel from Droidcon 2023.

Nice one, @conrad.connected. That sounds like a great idea.

@jon_thompson – in the meantime, there are also a considerable number of talks available for free.

Enjoy basking in the glow of your new wisdom.

If you get the chance, please report back with what you learned. Would be cool to hear that from you!
