What job titles have you held in your software testing / tech career?
I’m especially interested to see how people’s titles/roles evolve over the years, so it may be useful to start with your earliest role to your most recent.

Earliest role: Functionality / Localisation QA Tester
2nd role: Functionality QA Tester
3rd role: Test Engineer
Recent role: Manual Games Tester kinda feels more like a QA Engineer role dealing with the backend, api and automation as well
Tester, 2002
Test coordinator

Program test manager
Senior test manager
Tester, 2013
Advanced test manager
Senior test manager
Senior advisory consultant in test 2021

Test manager here is an individual contributor role similar to a specialized project manager
I dont think QA role titles evolve so much as being randomly generated.
I have been:
Software test engineer
software development engineer in test
quality engineer
quality analyst i/ii/iii
senior quality engineer
test engineer
software tester
web tester
All of those had very similar duties and work and mostly boiled down to whatever someone entered into the HR software. The stand outs with very different duties have been:
Engineering team lead
QA and Release Manager (current)
For the past 8.5 years it’s been “QA Engineer” and “Release Manager”. For the first time, it’s now “QA Analyst”.
I started my career in testing with a title as
Test analyst - 2014
Test Engineer
Senior Test Engineer
Senior QA Consultant
Quality Practice Lead being my most recent current role
SW Tester
SW Tester / Test Analyst
Test Analyst
QA Engineer for Mobile Applications
QA Engineer
Head of QA
House of QA Lead
Sw tester
Team leader
Group Manager
QA manager
Manager of programmers
Test project manager
Integration engineer
HW coordinator
Developer
Customer support
Sales engineer
SW Tester and house guru
Guess I’ve forgot a few ones.
I’ve been asked so many times (at conferences and meet ups) what my current title “Software Test Automation Technician” actually means. I now tend to just use QA.
Apprentice Test Analyst
Test Analyst
Test Lead
Test Analyst
Test Lead
Quality Engineer
Senior Test Engineer
Senior Tester
Senior QA Tester
Principal Test Engineer
Are people here changing the title within the company, or the job each few years?
I had these titles (different companies):
Software Testing Engineer
Software Tester
Software Testing Expert
IT QA Tester
Quality Engineer
The job title matched what I did only for half of my career/time.
In the software testing field, common job titles include Software Tester, QA Analyst, Test Engineer, Automation Tester, QA Lead or Manager, and Performance Tester. Each role focuses on different aspects of the testing process, from manual testing and quality assurance to test automation and performance evaluation. Enrolling in software testing courses can help you gain the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue these roles and grow your career in software testing.
oh my let me remember:
Associate Tester
Test Lead
Test Coordinator
Test Lead
Test Manager
SAP Test Lead
SAP Test Manager
Test Practice Lead
Junior Performance Test Analyst
Performance Test Analyst
Senior Performance Test Analyst
Moved company… (completely different expectations for roles)
Performance Test Engineer
Senior Performance Test Engineer
Engineer (Company decided to remove all levels and call everyone “Engineer”)
SDET
Test Analyst
System Tester
Trials Analyst
Trials Manager
Incident Manager
Senior Test Analyst
QA
Lead QA
Lead Test Engineer
I just realised that I have never had a designation that had the word “testing” or “test” or “QA” in it.
My designations have been:
Clever, but I suppose it helps the profession and helps sustain the title.
SQA Engineer
QA Software Tester
I have never had the role of “SDET” even though that probably was the closest description for what I have been doing for the majority of my testing career.
Interestingly, at my current place, everyone who works in the Quality job family had the role of “Quality Engineer”, even if they had varying responsibilities and skillsets. We’ve taken active steps to separate and specialise the roles recently, which helps differentiate between those skillsets. Hopefully this leads to more roads into Quality, and a better understanding of the value we all bring.
