Would someone be open to mentoring me about test automation?

Hi All,

I am looking for anyone who would be willing to mentor me in getting started with web automation.

I am currently a manual tester and have started learning Cypress on my own. However I am more than willing to learn other tools that may also help with web automation. I have learned some languages at a minimal level on my own (Python, C# & Java).

All help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

hi @nokulungah,

Welcome to the club and community. just bumping this so that we can find you a mentor! Could you elaborate a bit on your location and industry, that could perhaps help you find a good match?

I have two recommendations for you:

  1. Set a consistent schedule for your learning. Perhaps finding every Thursday evening. Clear the family calendar and dig in.
  2. On the link side, have you looked into these sites:

hope this helps you along,

Cheers, Jesper

there is a slack channel โ€œhangoutโ€ meeting thing where they link you to meet with a random tester for an hour - Iโ€™ve never managed to get a meeting slot that works for me . But it might work for you. here is the link Ministry of Testing Slack Invite | MoT

Hey @nokulungah, depending on where youโ€™re based I could be open to organising some mentoring with you.

I use Cypress extensively in my current role and have for a few years, and have previously done work with Selenium in Java a few years ago.

Depending on your timezone, it might not be a perfect fit, but if you let me know a bit more, might be able to make it work.

Thanks,
Will

Thank you so much for your recommendation, I will definitely follow through. Iโ€™m currently based in South Africa, i believe the timezone is GMT +2. Hopefully this information helps. Thank you again :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @will-banked , I would greatly appreciate your mentorship. Iโ€™m currently based in South Africa, I believe the timezone is GMT +2. However if the time difference isnโ€™t ideal I will definitely appreciate any other resources you may have to help guide me :slightly_smiling_face:

Greatly appreciative for your response!!

Okay great! Iโ€™m GMT +0 so I think we could make that work. Are you on the Ministry of Testing Slack?
If not, could be good to join up, and then we can have a chat about schedules and expectations and stuff on there.

Hi , Either you are providing UI testing or performance testing services, Java is widely used with selenium. I would recommend you to start with gaining knowledge on creating maven project based on java with selenium and testNG. You do not need to buy any special course for this. You can find playlists on YouTube for each tools and language mentioned above. Once you have learned all the concepts, you can even find a video to learn a POM based framework using all these tools. This should be sufficient to get you started on any automation project. You can then lean different languages and tools later to improve your knowledge.

Wish you all the best for your future.
